How to Put On a Fall Protection Harness

5/16/19

The steps to putting on a personal fall arrest system (PFAS) are straightforward. Even so, people often don their PFAS incorrectly. Some workers lose sight of how important it is to follow directions when it comes to ensuring a snug and proper fit. — or they might not really know how to put on a body harness. Placement and connection of the chest strap and D-ring critically affect harness fit and safety. In order to ensure proper protection, the full-body harness must be worn properly. Follow this simple six-step guide. It could save your life.

Before you test your harness, remove everything from your pockets.

How do you put on a fall protection harness?

  1. Hold the harness by the back D-ring and shake to allow any tangled straps to fall into place.
  2. Unbuckle the chest, leg and waist straps. If the harness has a belt, unbuckle it too.
  3. Slip the straps over the shoulders, so the back D-ring is located in the middle of the back between the shoulder blades.
  4. Pull the end of one leg strap between the legs and secure to the opposite end. Repeat with the other leg. If the harness has a belt, connect that after the leg straps.
  5. Connect the chest strap and position it in the mid-chest area, and then tighten the shoulder straps.
  6. After all the buckles have been connected, adjust so that the harness fits snugly, but allows a full range of movement.
